DIY: Acura EL Honda Civic Engine Oil Change

This is a simple procedure and everybody knows how to do that although there is always someone who do it for the first time. So I would like to put this procedure up not as much for telling something new but rather to make that someone more confident in what he is going to do.

In any case here it is:

STEP 1

This is all you need to perform the Oil change without a headache and more or less clean:
1. an aluminum sauce pan from dollar store as a replacement of an expensive oil container from Canadian Tire that costs from $10CAD and up;
2. a car jack;
3. a pair of rubber coated gloves I use them only when do oil change on a hot engine so not burn myself;
4. oil filter;
5. funnel;
6. two stands;
7. actual oil and a filter;
8. a set of tools or just a wrench to unscrew a drain bolt;
9. a piece of cloth to wipe out oil spills
10. a big sheet of plastic to put under a car so you can lay on it an not on the ground – I use an old table sheet.

STEP 2

Use a car jack to lift a car and rest it on stands. One side at a time obviously. make sure the car is securely supported and parking breaks are engaged

Put a sheet of table cover on a ground under your car.

Climb under the car and locate engine oil pan with a drain bolt. Also notice where is oil filter located as you will need to remove it later. See the next picture for oil filter location.

Place an aluminum sauce pan from dollar store under the drain bolt then take a wrench and unscrew it. When it’s almost removed use your hand to hold it otherwise there is a chance to drop it in a pan so you will have to fish out later. If the engine is hot wear gloves and keep your arm on top to make sure not to spill hot oil on yourself.

Drain all the oil, when oil stream become weak unscrew old oil filter. Hold it open side up otherwise you will spill the oil from it.

Now just sit and wait until all the oil will drain. Meantime you can remove oil cap from the engine.
When all the oil is gone climb back and screw back drain plug as well as new oil filter. Keep in mind to grease the rubber ring of the filter with some oil used or new before putting it on, see the pic ..

don’t over tight the oil filter – turn it 1/3 of a circle once the filter edge touches the engine body.

Make sure the drain plug is secured in place – don’t over tighten it either otherwise you can break the thread. Use common sense.

The rest is simple just follow the steps in their sequence:

- Lift you car with car jack and remove stands from under the car one side at a time.
- Lower the car on the ground.
- Using funnel pour new oil into engine into a special Oil inlet
- Acura 1.7 EL 2004 requires 3.5 litters of oil
- When done with amount of oil you think is enough CLOSE the cup
- sit in a car and turn on the engine
- Oil icon on a dash should stay on for a second or two then turn off, let engine idle for a minute max, then shut it down
- go back to the engine and using an oil level measure stick check the level of oil.
- make sure you have oil up to the upper (max) mark. Put some more if not enough

That’s it.

Don’t forget to close the inlet with cup before closing the hood.

Last thing is to reset “maintenance required” indicator.

To reset indicator follow these steps:
1. turn off engine
2. press and hold the Select/Reset knob in the instrument panel (the one that controls displayed Trip A, B and so on), then turn the ignition switch to ON(II)
3. Hold the knob for about ten seconds until the light goes off.

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.
