DIY: Rattling Heat Shield Problem

Have a rattling heat shield problem that annoys you all the time? Well the fix is very simple. Just take it off completely and you are good to go … If you like you heat shield very much and you don’t want to let it go then there is an easy fix for the rattling heat shield problem.

First of all the rattling sound is produced by a heat shield on yours car catalytic converter. The shield is designed to protect the interior  pieces that are in the area of a car right above the converter and potentially exposed to excessive heating from the exhaust pipe.

The two pieces of heat shield being held together around the converter with four bolts. Fixation points are the weakest part in there. Very often they rust and got loose. Once the heat shield doesn’t sit tight anymore it becomes rattle.

Get a kit from a car parts store with a stainless steel wire and some bolts to tie or “clam” the heat shield pieces back together.

Yet that fix will last you for some time – it is safe to remove that shield all together and call it a day.

DIY: Honda Civic/Acura EL 04 Rear Strut Bar Installation (TEIN)

Here I will go through a few steps on how to install rear strut bar (brace). There is not much to say about the procedure, although some tips could be helpful as well as images:

Tools that are needed to do the installation is a sharp razor knife and a long wrench socket head 14mm in size.

The installation procedure is very straight forward.

The rear upper strut bar is TEIN performance. Very light weight and strong construction. Build quality is outstanding.

Picked up this aluminum sport lightweight floor jack by Michelin from Canadian Tire. The jack was on special for under $100 CAD (if I remember correctly). Quite stable on the floor, sturdy design, two pieces handle bar is very strong and supper convenient to store. Love it so far. Two years later still in a mint condition – no oil leak or any other visible wear and tear. highly recommend if you see one of those …

Service Bulletin 02-002 – Honda Recall: Squeak at the Clutch Pedal

(Supersedes 02-002, dated January 15, 2002)

SYMPTOM

A squeak, a twang, or a notchy feel when the clutch pedal is pressed.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The clutch master cylinder spring is rubbing on the outer diameter of the piston when the pedal is pressed, or the master cylinder quick connect is moving.

Acura EL 01-04/Honda Civic 01-04 Key Specs

All what’s said below is applicable to Acura EL 01-04 (at least to my knowledge, correct me if I’m wrong and I will post an update). 

THE FOUR STANDARD CIVIC MODELS (the Civic SI and Hybrid are not covered here) share major mechanical pieces, but there are important differences. The DX and LX engines are identical, but the GX engine is designed to use the continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The EX described here is the only Civic with Honda’s VTEC variable valve timing system. It uses a true returnless fuel injection system with a pressure regulator in the tank, although there is a pulse damper on the fuel rail. Idle speed relearn is required after disconnecting the battery or powertrain control module (PCM) power or ground, but it’s simple. Warm the engine to operating temperature at 3,000 rpm,then let it idle for five minutes at no-load with the throttle closed.

The timing belt drives the water pump and Honda recommends changing both at the same time. Introduced in 2001, the platform was slightly revised in 2003, so alignment specs given here are for 2003 and later. Aftermarket fluids are not recommended for Honda transmissions and power steering. According to many in the aftermarket, Honda’s own fluids definitely provide smoother shifts and better service life. Service bulletins were issued to address a clicking noise while driving a manual transmission in second gear (internal repairs required), erratic gauge readings (reboot gauge module by disconnecting and touching both battery cables together), resetting the “maintenance required” indicator (turn off all lights first), and DTC P1607 (replace PCM).

DIY: Removing McGard wheel lock/broken lug nut

Recently there was a situation when I had to take off a wheel from my car.

WARNING: I tried to look on the web for a solution of how to take the lug nut off, I came across some advices and that was a bad idea to try one of them …

Some people on some forums say - get a socket of a size a tad smaller than a diameter of your lug nut and hummer it in until the socket sits tight, then use a wrench to loosen the broken nut - BIG MISTAKE.

I tried that – 1st it didn’t work for me (maybe worked for someone else), second I damaged my wheel bearing and it cost me close t0 $200 CAD to replace it … (the rear HUB replacement procedure I published in another article on this website).

Turned out that the McGard key broke when I tried to loosen lug nut on one of the wheels stud. That’s a very nasty situation. As I discovered lately the Security Lock lug nut corroded into a steel wheel whole and got stuck badly so the lock Key couldn’t sustain the pressure and broke.

On the picture above it can be seen clearly the crack on the wheel lock Key internal pattern.

And here is the lug nut itself after removing (the one to the right is the broken one). I had to take off all the other 3 wheel locks as I don’t have the lock no more and there is no way I could take a wheel off on a road might I get a flat tire.

The cone shaped tip broke-off after I force-turned it. Actually it stayed on the wheel lug and I had to use cold chisel to break it in pieces and take it out.

Second lug nut had a visible crack as well so I suspect it was nearly to a break point as well.

Here how you remove a security lock lug nut without the Key. All that you have to get is to invest into a magic tool kit called – “Hubcap and wheel lock removal kit”. See pictures below…

All you have to do is hammer the small socket (third from the left on the picture above) on top of the wheel lug nut using the applicator and a hammer.

Then use a 1/2″ drive extension and a 1/2″ wrench

Then use the extractor punch (thin steel stick) to hammer the lock out of that socket (otherwise it’s pretty hard to remove one after you are done).

Note:  I bought the kit from http://www.bosstoolsupply.com/ online store in Canada … it’s priced at $39.95 CAD + tax + $10 (or so) S/H – so total I payed around $60 CAD. But was worth it to buy as once I removed all four nuts (from 4 wheels) I sold the tool-kit for more or less the same price on kijiji.ca
